Kenya already re-opened its borders to international tourists and business people. You can finally plan your trip to explore the rich culture, wildlife safaris, and sandy coastal beaches in pleasant weather. 

It’s essential to note that since 1st January 2021; it’s not possible to get a visa on arrival. All visa applications should be before coming, as you’ll need to present the e-Visa at the point of entry. 

General Questions

Do I Need a Visa for My Holiday in Kenya?

Yes, all travellers entering Kenya require a visa. However, children under the age of 16 only need to present identification documents. 

What’s the Validity Period of the e-Visa?

The Kenya e-Visa is valid for three months, starting when you receive the visa. You can only stay in Kenya for a maximum of 90 days from your arrival date if you’re visiting for tourism or business purposes. 

If you’d like to exit and return to Kenya before the 90 days, you’ll need a new visa the second time. However, you can’t apply for a double visa while still in Kenya, so you’ll have to apply while outside Kenya even if the current visa is still valid. 

For a transit e-Visa, you can stay up to 72 hours. 

What Visa Type Do I Need to Enter Kenya?

If you plan to stay in Kenya for less than 90 days, you can apply for an e-Visa online. You’ll receive a link via the email you used in your application. It’s best to print two or more copies since you’ll need to present a copy at the point of entry.

If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a physical visa. This also applies if you failed to meet the requirements for the e-Visa.

You can apply for a physical visa at the Kenyan embassy, but it’s more expensive and has a more complex application procedure. 

When Should I Submit My Application for a Kenya e-Visa?

Your e-Visa application will get approval three months to your expected arrival date, even if you apply earlier. However, it’s advisable to ensure you submit your application at least three days to your arrival date. 

Do Children Also Need to Apply for the e-Visa?

Children under 16 years don’t need to apply for an e-Visa. They only need to present valid identification documents and a return ticket on arrival. 

From 17 years and above, the individual will need an e-Visa and a valid passport. The visa fees are the same as for the adults. 

Can I Extend My e-Visa to Kenya?

Yes, you can extend your e-Visa term only once, from 90 to 180 days. You’ll need to visit the Immigration Service Headquarters in Nairobi to do so. 

I Have My Visa, Is There Anything Else I Should Do?

The confirmation email will have a link to the visa, which you then download and print. You just need to present a copy with your passport when you arrive. 

Will the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Affect My Trip to Kenya?

Before travelling, it’s essential to confirm whether you comply with all COVID-19 rules in Kenya. Depending on the Kenyan government’s directives, they change from time to time. 

Although the Kenyan government doesn’t require proof of vaccination, you’ll need a COVID-19 test certificate. The Covid-19 PCR test should be 96 hours or less before leaving for Kenya.

Children below the age of five are exempt from this test.

Where Do I Apply for My Kenya Visa?

If you come from the UK or any other European country, you only submit your visa application online.

Are Group Applications Allowed?

It’s not a requirement to submit a group application, but it will save you from too much repetition since the information is similar. Every person pays the visa fee individually. 

Which Details Do I Need for the Application?

After providing the basic information on the visa application form, you’ll need to upload a passport-size photo and a passport scan. 

The additional information you’ll need includes:

  • Booking confirmation from a resort, hotel, or accommodation facility or an invitation letter from a Kenyan resident or the company you’ll be visiting where applicable
  • Details about your return or onward flight for transit visas
  • If you stay with family or friends, have a photo or scan of the host’s ID or passport

What Does the Application for the Visa for Kenya Cost?

A single visa for Kenya costs 130 EUR, without additional transaction costs. This price includes consular fees, application costs and VAT.

What Are the Payment Methods for My Visa?

You can complete the online payment via MasterCard, Visa, or American Express.

How and When Should I Receive My Visa for Kenya?

After submitting your application, you’ll get a confirmation email. You should receive your visa in about eight days, but it could take longer since the reviewal process is manual.

Upon approval, you’ll receive an SMS notification and an email with a link to the visa download page. 

Do I Have to Visit the Embassy or Consulate at Any Point?

No, you’ll only do so if you plan to stay in Kenya for more than 90 days or if your online application is unsuccessful. 

Must I Have a Hotel or Flight Confirmation Before Applying for the Visa?

Yes, you need to present a booking confirmation from any accommodation facility or your host’s address if staying with friends or family. You also need the details of a return or onward flight when applying for the visa. 

I’m Not Sure about My Exact Arrival Date in Kenya; Is That an Issue?

If your arrival date is different from the one you indicated on the application form, it’s okay if it falls between 30-60 days from the expected arrival date. 

You can arrive up to 30 days before or 60 days after the date you filled. 

Questions Regarding the visa

Can I Use My Visa to Conduct Business or Work in Kenya?

No, you need a special work permit from the embassy to work in Kenya. If you’re travelling for business, you must indicate so in the application form. If your employer is outside Kenya, you can only conduct business in Kenya for a business visa. 

How Do I Present My Photo or Passport Scan?

Once your payment is complete, an upload page will pop up. You can upload the passport-size photo and passport scan in any file format. 

Should I Apply for a New Visa if I Get a New Passport After Submitting My Application?

Yes, your visa links precisely to your passport and the passport number you used on the application. If you get a new permit, ensure you apply for a new visa.

Changing or Cancelling an Application

I Made Some Errors Filling the Application Form; What Do I Do?

Once the submission is successful, it’s impossible to adjust or change any details. Any errors can lead to rejection of visa invalidation, but you can apply for a new visa in such a case.

If you notice any mistakes after getting your visa, it’s best to apply for a new one even if it appears valid. Kenyan authorities can deny you entry if the information is incorrect. 

Can I Change or Cancel My Application?

When your application gets processed, it’s not possible to cancel it. Processing happens in about five minutes after payment confirmation.
